Daniel Gafford Sets New Record For Most Consecutive Shots Made Without A Miss

Daniel Gafford has made his last 28 consecutive shots in the NBA, the most since play-by-play tracking started in 1996-97.

The Dallas Mavericks are hoping to solidify themselves as a top-six team in the Western Conference, with a series of trade deadline trades reinforcing the roster for a push. Daniel Gafford was one of the key acquisitions and he’s already impressing the world on his new team, having made his last 28 consecutive shots.

In the second quarter of their game against the Chicago Bulls, Gafford set the NBA record for most consecutive field goals made with 23 in a row. He ended the game with five more made baskets without a miss, extending his total to 28 as the record remains active. Gafford could further extend this record when the Mavericks face the Warriors on Wednesday.

The previous record holder was Derrick Favors, who made 22 consecutive shots during his stint with the New Orleans Pelicans in 2020-21.

Gafford is averaging 10.7 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks since joining the Mavericks. He has had a hard time solidifying a spot in the starting lineup, with coach Jason Kidd using Gafford and Dereck Lively II interchangeably. In their blowout win over the Bulls, Lively and Gafford combined for 20 makes on 21 shot attempts.

The efficiency of the big men in Dallas is helped tremendously by the superstar point guard running the show. Luka Doncic ended the night with his seventh consecutive triple-double which involved 14 assists from the dimes and lobs thrown to Gafford and Lively.

The Mavericks Are Clicking At The Right Time

After a shocking spell of games where Dallas went 1-6 in seven games, the franchise has picked up three straight wins to get themselves back in the race for the No. 6 seed in the West. They are currently tied for the No. 7 seed with the Sacramento Kings and just one game behind the No. 6 seed Phoenix Suns, who won a crucial matchup against the Cavaliers tonight.

The rhythm and defensive sensibility in Dallas has improved over the last few games after a horrid run of form which had Kyrie Irving openly try to keep the spirit of fans high as their top-six charge looked all but over.

Gafford has been crucial for the Mavericks, with his incredible offensive efficiency and rim protection catapulting the team forward. He spoke about what he needs to succeed after a recent win.

“As long as I stay out of my head, the sky’s the limit for me. Just keeping my teammates in tune with keeping me from being frustrated and keeping me from getting down on myself and at the end of the day, just coming out and doing my job. Blocking shots, having energy, talking on defense [and] being an anchor.”

With the red-hot form of Doncic, the Mavericks should be one of the teams to watch in the West. Everyone keeps talking about how dangerous the Lakers and Warriors could be if they made it into the playoffs, but that is arguably the truest for the Mavericks.

They have two unstoppable offensive options in Luka and Kyrie. They’re finding utility throughout their roster, especially with their ultra-efficient bigs. If shooters like P.J. Washington, Josh Green, and more can find their stroke consistently, the Mavericks can tear through most teams in the West.
