FILMING of the sequel to Disney’s Maleficent is well under way and it is clear stars Elle Fanning and Angelina Jolie are absolutely loving being reunited on set.

The American actresses are in the UK working on the follow up to the 2014 smash hit fairy tale adventure.

Both are returning to play their characters – first made famous via Disney’s Sleeping Beauty – with 20-year-old Elle reprising her role as Princess Aurora and 42-year-old Ange returning as titular fairy, Maleficent.

Taking to Instagram on Tuesday, Elle showed that both she and Angelina are delighting in rediscovering their characters – and are having a jolly marvellous time on set.

“Ultimate Photobomb #Maleficent2,” Elle wrote as she shared a selfie of herself wearing a white robe and silver, reflective sunglasses.

The young actress had her hair tied up with flowers, while Angelina was posed behind with her iconic character horned headdress on.

A second image showed Elle laughing as a beaming Angelina – who was made an honorary Dame in 2014 – flashed a peace sign behind her as they goofed around beside film trailers.

“It’s bring your mom to work day on the #Maleficent2 set,” Elle joked as she shared the second image, and seemed to have the script of the sequel sitting in front of her, reflecting in her glasses.

Fans of the 2014 film will recall it had a surprising twist which saw Maleficent become the one to wake Princess Aurora from her slumber with a kiss of true love.

The film saw wronged Maleficent curse the child as she sought revenge on her former friend, King Stefan – however warmed to Aurora over time and regretted her actions.

Hailed for its powerful feminist message, the sequel looks set to develop the friendship between Aurora and Maleficent.

The official synopsis reveals the sequel is: “A fantasy adventure that picks up several years after Maleficent, in which audiences learned of the events that hardened the heart of Disney’s most notorious villain and drove her to curse a baby Princess Aurora.

“Maleficent II continues to explore the complex relationship between the horned fairy and the soon to be Queen, as they form new alliances and face new adversaries in their struggle to protect the moors and the magical creatures that reside within.”

Others returning to the film include Sam Riely as Maleficent’s shape-shifting servant Diaval, while Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple and Lesley Manville return as fairies Knotgrass, Thistlewit and Flittle.

Michelle Pfeiffer joins the cast as Queen Ingrith along with Chiwetel Ejiofor and Robert Lindsay.

A release date for the sequel is yet to be revealed but it would seem fans already cannot wait for it to hit screens.

“I can’t wait for this!!!! So excited,” one fan gushed on Instagram.
