Ben Affleck’s Family Hated His Look in This Film

Ben Affleck has admitted that his wife Jennifer Garner, daughters Violet and Seraphina, as well as son Samuel, disliked the facial hair he had to grow for that one particular film.

He told Entertainment Weekly:

My wife is a very polite and kind woman. She and the kids did not like the beard. It had an exposed wire vibe. It was hated in my home.

The actor wore a striking shag and beard for Argo, which is based on the true story of six Americans held captive in Iran during its revolution in the 1970s.

Affleck said his family gave his hair bad reviews. “My family unanimously hated the look.” Affleck recalled, “My daughter was like, ‘What kind of work would want you to look like that?‘” His response was, “That’s a good question.”

The actor acknowledged that he had contrasting feelings about his beard, sometimes considering it “cool” and other times worried he reminded him of Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees.

Ben Affleck Was Required to Go With That Look for Argo

Ben Affleck’s transformation in Argo is both physical and psychological. To fit into the role of Tony Mendez, Affleck had to shed his usual clean-cut, Hollywood look and embrace a more rugged, 1970s-style appearance.

The spy thriller features the actor sporting shaggy locks and a full beard. The story revolves around a secret operation to rescue six Americans during the Iranian hostage crisis in 1979, which is overseen by a real-life CIA spy, played by Affleck, who adopts the style of the era, complete with bad hair.

The entire cast of the movie made a commitment to maintaining an authentic 1970s appearance. Everybody went for it. There was no vanity among the actors, stated the actor.
