Lady Gaga has revealed for the first time she wore a bulletproof dress to sing at President Joe Biden’s inauguration.

The Poker Face hitmaker performed at the ceremony back in January, singing the Star Spangled Banner before Vice President Kamala Harris was sworn in in front of the United States Capitol in Washington DC.

The 35-year-old spoke about her role in the presidential inauguration, and said it was “one of the proudest days of my whole life”.

She told British Vogue she had a “deep fear” when Donald Trump was president, and she said “ushering 45 out and 46 in is something I’ll be able to tell my children all about”.

Gaga then spoke about her showstopping custom-made Schiaparelli dress, which was inspired by the American flag and featured a tailored navy cashmere jacket and a voluminous red skirt.

“Singing in a Schiaparelli bulletproof dress… I don’t know if people know this about me, but if I weren’t who I am today, I would have been a combat journalist. That was one of my dreams,” the House of Gucci star explained.

It’s the first time she’s revealed details of her dress, which was created by Schiaparelli’s creative director Daniel Roseberry.

At the time, the American designer described the outfit, which was finished off with a gilded dove brooch, as “a love letter to the country I miss so dearly”.

“Maison Schiaparelli is honoured to have this chance to dress the iconic Lady Gaga on this historic Inauguration Day. God Bless Lady Gaga and God Bless America,” Roseberry said in a statement.

In another video for British Vogue, she said while discussing her gown: “Nobody knows this, but this is a bulletproof dress”, while pointing to a picture of her at the inauguration.

“When I saw that golden dove, I just knew that this was the right piece, and I knew Schiaparelli being an Italian fashion house, it was something that I really really wanted to do for my heritage as an Italian-American woman that would be singing for president 45 to be leaving and to invite president 46 into office,” Gaga explained.

Roseberry hasn’t commented on the bulletproof element of the dress, but did share a clip of Gaga’s interview with British Vogue on his Instagram Stories.

The designer also created Gaga’s stunning 80s-inspired dress for the cover of the famed fashion publication, and shared behind-the-scenes clips showing detailed drawings and fittings.
