Margot Robbie is ready for Lady Gaga to take over the role of Harley Quinn.

The Barbie star, 33, shared her excitement for the 37-year-old performer to step into the role in the upcoming sequel Joker: Folie á Deux during Variety and Entertainment Tonight’s Golden Globe 2024 Awards digital pre-show.

“Oh my god, she’s going to crush it. Are you kidding? She’s going to be amazing, I can’t wait to see it,” she told host Marc Malkin.

When asked if the pair had texted about the role, Robbie — who played Quinn in 2016’s Suicide Squad — responded, “I actually haven’t spoke to her about it. I almost don’t want to know so I can save it for the surprise when I get to see the movie.”

Robbie previously shared she was “so happy” to see other actresses stepping into the role of Harley Quinn, specifically Lady Gaga, in an October 2022 interview with MTV.

“It makes me so happy because I said from the very beginning, all I want is for Harley Quinn to be one of those characters, the way Macbeth or Batman always gets passed from great actor to great actor,” Robbie said at the time.

She continued by saying that there is an opportunity for a performer to make an iconic role their own.

“And I feel like in not so many cases are they female characters,” she explained. “Queen Elizabeth I, but like beyond that — which I got to have a crack at as well, which I was honored to do. I was like, ‘Wow, Cate Blanchett did Queen Elizabeth I. Now I get to.'”

She added of Gaga: “It’s such an honor to have built a foundation strong enough that Harley can now be one of those characters who other actors get to have a go at playing. And I think she’ll do something incredible with it.”

Lady Gaga confirmed her casting in director Todd Phillips’ Joker: Folie à Deux on social media in August 2022, posting an animated video of her and Joaquin Phoenix’s silhouettes set to old-timey music.

In April, Gaga and the director shared that they finished filming the highly-anticipated sequel on their respective Instagram pages.

“That’s a wrap. Thanks to these two (+ the entire cast) and the BEST crew that the film industry has to offer. From top to bottom,” Phillips wrote in a caption to the two photos. One image shows Gaga staring into the camera while wearing light clown makeup; another features Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck / Joker in full makeup and costume, tilting his head to the right in a seated position.

“Gonna crawl into a cave now (edit room) and put it all together,” the director added in his caption.

Gaga kept her message to fans eagerly anticipating the Joker sequel short, simply writing: “That’s a wrap ❤️‍🔥 🎬🃏 X, Harleen.”.
