From managing health scares to raising two dogs, Justin Bieber and Hailey Bieber have been through a lot during their first four years of marriage. Although their relationship has been full of ups and downs, there is one aspect about being married to Justin that Hailey loves the most.

For the March 2023 cover story of Vogue Australia, the “Changes” singer interviewed his wife about her experience spearheading Rhode, her favorite song, her fashion tips, and the best part about their marriage. “My favorite thing about being married is honestly the companionship I feel we have,” Hailey says. “Genuinely, you are my best friend in the entire world. There’s nobody I would rather spend more time with or do anything with.”

The model and the entrepreneur have a long history together. Ever since they met at the Today show in 2009, the two started a special friendship that later became romantic. Although they sparked dating rumors in 2014, Hailey and Justin explained that they weren’t an exclusive couple. They decided to part ways in 2016, but they rekindled the flame again in June of 2018.

“The common denominator, I promise you, is always church,” Hailey told Vogue. “By then we were past the drama. I just gave him a hug. By the end of the conference, he was like, ‘We’re not going to be friends.’ I was like, ‘We’re not?'”

From there, things moved quickly for the duo. Just one month after reuniting, Justin popped the question. Two months later, they tied the knot at a courthouse in New York City on September 13, 2018. During their first year of marriage, Hailey admitted that they experienced setbacks and had difficulty adjusting to their new life together. “I’m not going to sit here and lie and say it’s all a magical fantasy,” she said to Vogue.

“It’s always going to be hard. It’s a choice. You don’t feel it every single day. You don’t wake up every day saying, ‘I’m absolutely so in love and you are perfect.’ That’s not what being married is. But there’s something beautiful about it anyway—about wanting to fight for something, commit to building with someone.”

Justin also agreed that their first year as a married couple was difficult for him because he was coping with past traumas from becoming famous at an early age and the instability he experienced in his life as a child. “There was just lack of trust,” he admitted to GQ. “There was all these things that you don’t want to admit to the person that you’re with because it’s scary.

You don’t want to scare them off by saying, ‘I’m scared.’” He also explained that he didn’t trust himself because he “abused all of my relationships” and was “disrespectful to women.”

After growing together and facing these difficulties, the couple is at a strong place in their relationship. “We’re just creating these moments for us as a couple—as a family—that we’re building these memories,” he told GQ. “And it’s beautiful that we have that to look forward to. Before, I didn’t have that to look forward to in my life. My home life was unstable. Like, my home life was not existing. I didn’t have a significant other. I didn’t have someone to love. I didn’t have someone to pour into, but now I have that.”

Justin also credits Hailey as someone who helped him overcome challenges and inspire him to become a better person. “She is just a strong, consistent, stabilizing force in his life, and that was something he was missing all those years,” his friend Ryan Good said.
