Justin Timberlake is in full promotional mode, as his forthcoming album Everything I Thought It Was is slated to arrive in a little over a week. The singer recently dropped another tune from the project, but it didn’t enjoy a splashy arrival on the Billboard charts this week.

“Drown” is the second song released from Everything I Thought It Was. Despite some initial excitement, the track doesn’t manage to debut on the Hot 100, Billboard’s ranking of the most-consumed songs in the U.S. While it doesn’t appear on the tally this frame, it only missed reaching the list by one very frustrating space.

Instead of hitting the Hot 100, “Drown” debuts on the Bubbling Under Hot 100. The tally acts essentially as a 25-spot extension of the main chart, acting as a space for those tunes that came very close to making it to the Hot 100. Timberlake’s latest starts at No. 1 on the roster, which basically means it is the one-hundred-and-first most-consumed title in the country.

“Drown” was released only a few weeks after the first single from Everything I Thought It Was. “Selfish” arrived in late January to mixed reviews. The tune started its time on the Hot 100 at No. 19, and it hasn’t climbed since then.

While “Selfish” might not have advanced past its starting point, it also hasn’t disappeared, which is a good sign. This week, the single lands at No. 33 on the Hot 100 in its fifth frame on the tally. It’s been bouncing around inside the top 40 for a month now, which shows that there is some sustained interest in the cut.

While “Drown” may have failed to reach the Hot 100, it’s worth noting that it doesn’t appear to be the second official single from Everything I Thought It Was. Instead, it looks like it is what’s called a promotional single, which means it’s only meant to continue to hype an artist or future project, not necessarily live on radio or receive the same support as a traditional single. “Drown” likely isn’t being pushed to radio, and it might not have been marketed as heavily.

At the same time that it missed the Hot 100, “Drown” also narrowly failed to become a top 10 on another chart it might have succeeded on. The track launches at No. 11 on the Digital Song Sales chart, coming in just underneath the highest tier. According to Luminate, the promotional single sold just 3,123 copies in its initial tracking period.
