Jannik Sinner conquered the tennis world in Melbourne, beating Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev en route to his first Major trophy. Novak mentioned Jannik ahead of Indian Wells, praising his rival and calling him a deserved Major winner.

Djokovic highlighted Sinner’s incredible comeback in the title clash against Medvedev, with the Italian overcoming two sets to love deficit and lifting a notable trophy at 22. Jannik took charge in the second part of 2023, winning two ATP 500 titles and claiming the Davis Cup crown for Italy.

Also, Sinner notched two wins over Djokovic in the closing stages, gathering a boost ahead of 2024 and using it nicely.

Jannik and Novak met in the Australian Open semi-final, and the young gun claimed a commanding 6-1, 6-2, 6-7, 6-3 victory in three hours and 22 minutes, moving into his first Major final.

Sinner outplayed Djokovic in every segment, playing against no break points and delivering five breaks from 11 opportunities. Novak struggled in the shortest range up to four strokes, spraying over 50 unforced errors and suffering one of his worst losses at Majors.

Sinner faced another challenging rival in the title clash, with Medvedev seeking his second Major trophy from the sixth final. The Russian built a massive advantage before the Italian performed a notable comeback and clinched a 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 win in three hours and 44 minutes, becoming a Major champion at 22.

Sinner stayed composed despite a massive deficit, climbing back and becoming Italy’s first Major champion since 1976! Nothing separated the two rivals, with four breaks on each side and one point more on Jannik’s tally. Sinner bounced back from the third set and finished the match with more winners and fewer unforced errors.

The young gun survived a couple of challenging moments in sets three and four, forcing a decider and bringing the victory home in style. The more experienced player got off to a reliable start, serving at 86% in the first set and losing only four points behind the initial shot.

Jannik struggled to find the first serve or defend the second efficiently, getting broken two times.

Daniil forged the lead with a break at 15 in game three and produced one good hold after another en route to a 5-3 advantage.

Jannik served to stay in the set in game nine, spraying a backhand error and handing the opener to his rival after 36 minutes. Medvedev controlled the pace in the second set despite serving at 50%, delivering a double break and forging a massive advantage despite losing serve once in the closing stages.

The Italian denied four break points in the second game before missing a game point at 1-2, losing serve after the Russian’s volley winner and falling behind. Daniil held with a fine hold in game five and secured another break at 4-1, building an enormous 6-3, 5-1 advantage after 71 minutes.

Jannik finally showed more on the return in the seventh game, pulling one break back and gathering some confidence ahead of the third set. Medvedev served for the set at 5-3 and faced a break point that could have turned the tables.

However, he defended it and forced Sinner’s mistake, moving 6-3, 6-3 in front in under an hour and a half and closer to the finish line. The Italian lost six points in his games in the third set and grabbed a late break that kept him in contention.

Medvedev squandered a game point in game ten and experienced a break after a forced error, with Sinner reducing the overall deficit and launching his comeback.

Daniil survived challenging service games at the beginning of the fourth set and stayed on the positive side. The seventh game could have been crucial, with the Russian spraying a backhand error at 30-0, blowing a chance to create three break opportunities.

He earned one, and Sinner erased it with an ace before closing the game for 4-3. Daniil locked the result at 4-4 before Jannik clinched the ninth game with a forehand down the line winner, keeping the pressure on the other side.

Medvedev felt it in the tenth game, facing a set point after a wayward backhand. Jannik punched a powerful forehand, stealing the rival’s serve and taking the set 6-4 to force a decider after three hours and six minutes. They served well early in the decider before Daniil missed a volley at 2-3, offering Jannik three break chances.

The Italian grabbed the second with a forehand crosscourt winner, moving 4-2 in front and putting one hand on the trophy. Sinner cemented the lead with a powerful serve in game seven, forcing Medvedev to serve to stay in the match.

Daniil held at 15, reducing the deficit and hoping for one more chance on the return in game nine. Jannik served for his first Major title and forced the rival’s mistake for a match point. The Italian converted it with a forehand down the line winner, wrapping up an incredible comeback and celebrating his first out of many Major trophies.

“Jannik outplayed me in the semi-final. After that, he made an incredible comeback against Daniil in the final. He absolutely deserved his first Major title,” Novak Djokovic said.
