Is Team Chance hoarding the Season 25 talent? John Legend wants to know

Team Chance is shaping up to be a Season 25 force on The Voice, thanks in no small part to Chicago-based pop Artist Maddi Jane.

The 25 year-old singer already made waves with a rare 4-Chair turn during her earlier Blind Audition, and Maddi only raised the competitive stakes higher this week (March 19) with a sensational, pop-infused duet cover (alongside fellow Team Chance Artist Nadège) of the Frankie Valli classic “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You.”

No one wanted to see either Artist go home after Maddi and Nadège wowed all four Coaches with their energy-amped and perfectly-harmonized performance. And even though they did each find a way to stick around beyond this week’s Battles round, it was Maddi Jane who made the first cut.

With super-tight harmonies and showcase-style vocal runs that gave each Artist her own spotlight moment, the Maddi-Nadège connection gave Chance the Rapper something solid to gloat about as a Coach with almost too much talent on his hands. And right on cue, Chance wasted no opportunity to do just that, leaping into action once his gifted singers had finished.

“That’s my team!” Chance gushed as the duo created a mini-meltdown onstage, bringing John Legend to his feet and leaving both Dan + Shay and Reba McEntire begging for more.

Somebody’s gonna use a Steal — it might not be your team anymore!” Dan Smyers taunted Chance, while spreading his starstruck praise around for both Artists. “Your tones are so special. You guys both have what it takes to go really really far in this show. I wish the performance was longer — that’s my only note!” he beamed.

The Queen of Country was right there with him. “You shared the stage like professionals. Your vocals are just so, as Chance would say, ‘Dope!’ … Can y’all just sing three or four more songs for us, to help us make that decision?!” McEntire pleaded.

It was Legend, though, who really felt conflicted over the possibility that this week’s Battle might spell the end for either Artist. “I fought for both of you and I’m so jealous that you are not on Team Legend right now — aside from my team!” he confessed, making no secret that he fully intended to nab whichever Artist Chance didn’t choose.

“Maddi, every melodic choice you made was flawless. It just had such a superstar swagger to it!” Legend added, before throwing down a big competitive challenge: “I’m sitting here waiting to steal somebody, I’m telling you now. Choose wisely, Chance! Choose wisely, my friend.”

In the end, there really wasn’t a losing choice to be made, though Chance picked Maddi Jane for her “superstar presence” and “amazing vocal strength.”

“I really love Maddi’s knack for improvisation,” Chance explained. “She’s obviously a star; she’s an extremely talented vocalist… I really want somebody that feels like they belong here to be on my team — somebody who has that confidence and strength. I think that she could go all the way!”
