The love story between Travis Kelce and the children of Operation Breakthrough is a heartwarming tale with origins dating back to 2016, when Kelce first visited the facility at 30th and Troost.
Operation Breakthrough, a non-profit organization founded in 1971 by Sister Corita Bussanmas and Sister Berta Sailer, serves as a beacon of hope for Kansas City’s working midtown families. While it has long provided a safe and nurturing environment for children in poverty, Kelce noticed a gap in support for teens during his visit. With a passion for STEM education and a desire to aid at-risk youth, Kelce’s foundation, 87 and Running, stepped in to fund the First Lego League robotics team at Operation Breakthrough in 2018, providing $45,000 to support the program.
Kelce’s commitment to the children of Operation Breakthrough only grew stronger when he signed a six-year extension with the Chiefs football team. Recognizing his own privileged upbringing, Kelce was determined to ensure that the teens at Operation Breakthrough had access to the same opportunities he did. His vision for the Ignition Lab was born out of this desire, aiming to provide teens with hands-on STEM opportunities and industry-recognized skills in areas such as automotive, design, green tech, and software programming.
The Ignition Lab, set to occupy the muffler shop adjacent to Operation Breakthrough, will feature 10 dedicated labs offering a range of activities from multimedia production to automotive engineering. It serves as a natural progression for teens who have aged out of Operation Breakthrough’s MakerCity program and provides an alternative for those who may have nowhere else to turn.
Kelce’s impact on the children of Operation Breakthrough extends far beyond his status as a famous athlete. To them, he is a caring, devoted friend who actively engages with them, reads books, dances, and answers their questions. His genuine connection with the children, coupled with his commitment to their future, serves as an inspiration for us all—to play hard, remain loyal to our communities, and shine bright for those in need, expecting nothing in return.
