Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse Wins Every Single Award it was Nominated for at the Annie Awards

When one by one Marvel projects were falling flat at the box office, Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse went on to become the only flag bearer of the superhero franchise in 2023.

The animated project went on to amass $690.9 million against a production budget of $100-$150 million when Brie Larson’s The Marvels and, Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania failed to create a mark at the box office.

However, Across the Spiderverse has added another feather to its cap after it went on to win every single award it was nominated for at the Annie Awards.

Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse Secures Multiple Awards At The Annie Awards

According to the media outlet The Hollywood Reporter, Sony’s animated sequel Spider-Man: Across The Spiderverse went on to secure seven awards at the Annie Awards.

The much-hyped project went on to leave behind  Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, Nimona, and The Boy and the Heron in the Best Feature category.

 Across The Spiderverse went on to secure its name in the Best Editorial, Best Music, Best Character Design, Best Production Design, Best FX, and Best Direction categories.

Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse

The movie runner-ups were The Boy and the Heron, Nimona, and Blue Eye Samurai which went on to secure six awards in the TV/ Media category including Best FX and Best Writing. Apart from the Annie Awards, Across the Spiderverse went on to create an impact at the Critics’ Choice Awards recently. The animated project was awarded the Critics’ Choice award for the best-animated feature.

Spider-Man Across the Spiderverse Director Talks About The Development of Spider-Punk

During an interview with Discussing Films in 2023, filmmaker Justin K. Thompson spoke about Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse and even mentioned about one of the most visually complex characters Spider-Punk. On discussing how the character of Spider-Punk was brought to life, Thompson said-

 “Spider-Punk is voiced amazingly by Daniel Kaluuya. From the beginning, we thought it would be so cool for Miles to meet somebody on this journey who could support his idea of “writing your own story” and who’s the antithesis of all these authority figures in Miles’ way. We looked at all the Marvel comics and found that in Spider-Punk with his punk rock nature and rejection of norms, authority, and traditional ideas.”

While talking about the idea behind Spider-Punk’s strange visual representation. He explained-

“So we thought, “Let’s let his animation style represent that too, and let’s try all these crazy experiments. It was cool because that’s kind of how punk rock zines and punk rock posters are, they’re like experimental art projects. The way a lot of punk rock art is done, they’re hand cut, pasted, drawn, glued together, and then xeroxed as well. We just thought. So we developed all these crazy technical tools. They start with this traditional animation pass, and then the tools that we developed can adapt all the different parts of him to all these different custom looks we created that are based on classic punk rock posters”

Spider-Punk in Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse

Filmmaker Justin K. Thompson revealed that it took them two to three years to develop Spider-Punk. He said-

“And we can assign all these body parts very distinct emotional beats wherever we wanted them to appear like sudden visual changes. I think that process probably took two or three years to develop, and we really only came together like right at the end.”

From spectacular animation to combining the essence of humanity within the storyline- Spider-Man Across the Spiderverse had every element to become a blockbuster. With an IMDb rating of 8.6 out of 10, Across the Spiderverse can be streamed on Prime Video.
