Princess Leonor of Spain revealed her tatty mobile phone at the Olympics in Paris on Monday.

The heir to the Spanish throne, 18, joined her sister, Infanta Sofia, 17, in the stands of the Eiffel Tower Stadium on day three of the Olympics to watch a Beach Volleyball match between the Netherlands and Spain.

The 18-year-old proved she was like any other teenager as she playfully took selfies on her iPhone, with her screen protector crumbling at the sides.

It’s not the first time the Spanish royal, who is set to make history as Spain’s first queen regnant since her fourth great-grandmother Isabella II, who reigned from 1833 to 1868, has proven her down to earth nature.

It’s an approach that is cementing her position as the people’s princess, along with her undertaking military training, delivering impressive speeches, and her sleek sense of style.

The princess gave her first public speech in 2018 when she was just 13 years old to mark the 40th anniversary of the Spanish constitution.

In 2019, she delivered an impressive speech at the Princess of Girona Foundation Awards in Barcelona in four languages – Spanish, Catalan, English and Arabic.

As well as inheriting her mother’s polished sense of style, she has reportedly learned how to play tennis, sail, perform gymnastics, and play the cello.

The royal made her first solo appearance without her mother and father aged 15 as she presided over the Cervantes Institute’s 30th anniversary in Madrid in 2021.

Six months later, the princess headed to Wales to study at the private Atlantic College.

Leonor enrolled on a £67,000, two-year course to study for her International Baccalaureate diploma at the school, which she has now completed.

In preparation for her role as Spain’s head of state and commander-in-chief of the armed forces, Leonor is completed three years of military training in line with tradition, as she follows the path of her father, King Felipe.

After training at the General Military Academy in Zaragoza, which is Spain’s equivalent to Sandhurst, she will go to naval school and will complete her three years at the General Air Academy.

The princess revealed her enthusiasm for being a cadet at the Princesa de Girona Foundation award ceremony in Girona, Catalonia, last year.

She said: ‘I have just finished high school and I am about to start a new stage with a period of military training.

‘I am happy because I know how much the Spanish value our armed forces… it is an important moment in my life and I feel very excited and determined to continue learning and giving my best effort.’

It was also revealed that the young Princess would go on to study law at university once her training with the military is complete, although her choice of university has not yet been revealed.

In October, the young royal – whose formal title is Princess of Astorias – swore allegiance to the Spanish constitution at the Lower House in Madrid.

Despite the country’s political divisions, reports out of Spain suggestion the nation is largely united behind the young princess, who is completing her military training in her role as Cadet Borbon.

While she was studying at UWC Atlantic College in Wales, the royal kept her appearances to a minimum.

But she has slowly been stepping into the spotlight since taking on her military role, causing her popularity to skyrocket.

According to El Espanol newpaper, Princess Leonor is now the most popular member of the Spanish Royal Family, even beating her father King Felipe to the title.

At the Princesa de Asturias Awards in Oviedo, Spain, in 2023, the princess acknowledged how important the proceedings are for her future role as Head of State.

She said: ‘I very well understand and am aware of what my duty is and what my responsibilities entail.’

The pair smiled for a photograph in front of the Eiffel Tower while supporting Spanish athletes competing in the Olympics

On Monday, Leonor took a break from her royal activities to enjoy the Olympics in Paris.

Princess Leonor and her younger sister Infanta Sofia of Spain were pictured smiling and chatting as they watched Beach Volleyball.

The pair looked engrossed in the game as they clapped enthusiastically from the stands at the Eiffel Tower Stadium.

The royal duo were sat next to Alejandro Blanco, the president of the Spanish Olympic Committee, who was donning a red and yellow top in support of his country.

Leonor – who is the heir to the Spanish throne – was snapped in a navy polo shirt with the colours of her country’s flag around the hem of the sleeves.

She paired with a pair of white trousers and her pink Paris Olympic games lanyard and gold earrings.

Sofia donned a simple yet stylish ensemble consisting of a white polo shirt and a pair of trendy light-washed denim jeans.

The pair looked chic as they opted to wear their brunette tresses down and opted to wear natural, glowy makeup.
