The former third-round pick steps away from the league a month into his time with the Utah Jazz

NBA champion Otto Porter Jr. has announced his shock retirement.

The 30-year-old Utah Jazz forward revealed his decision in a statement via the team’s website.

“For the past 11 years, I had the chance to live my lifelong dream of playing in the NBA,” he wrote.

“That dream was capped by winning an NBA Championship!

“Unfortunately, my body is not allowing me to play at the level that I expect of myself, and I have therefore decided to retire.”

Fans on X, formerly known as Twitter, were seemingly stunned by the news.

“Woah… this is a shocker,” one comment read.

A second said they “thought he woulda signed with someone this off-season. Enjoy retirement OPJ.”

While a third replied, “Happy retirement Warriors Legend.”

Having joined the Jazz in February as part of a trade along with Kira Lewis Jr. from the Toronto Raptors, Porter Jr. failed to appear for his new team.

He was waived by Utah earlier on Monday.

Prior to his time in Utah, Porter Jr. had spent most of his career as a member of the Washington Wizards, who drafted him third overall in 2013.

There he started 271 of his 384 appearances, averaging 10.7 points, 5 rebounds, and 1.4 assists.

Traded to the Chicago Bulls in 2019, he made just 54 appearances over three seasons before being sent to the Orlando Magic.

Porter Jr. subsequently signed for the Golden State Warriors, playing 63 games in the 2022-2023 season on his way to an NBA Championship win.

Just 23 appearances followed before he was traded to Utah.
