Here is the list of wide receivers currently on the Kansas City Chiefs’ roster — Rashee Rice, Skyy Moore, Justin Watson, Kadarius Toney, Montrell Washington and Justyn Ross.

Sure, the Chiefs’ offseason starts with contract negotiations with pass rusher Chris Jones and cornerback L’Jarius Sneed before the NFL’s new year starts next week. But the biggest hole on the Chiefs’ roster is the position responsible for catching passes from superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

The hole is so big that most analysts see what could be a logical solution for coach Andy Reid and general manager Brett Veach when the Chiefs are on the clock with the No. 32 selection to end the first round of the NFL Draft: selecting the best wide receiver available.

Although he anticipated several trades in the first round, Brugler had the Chiefs staying put with their 32nd pick to select Texas receiver Xavier Worthy, who was the fastest player at the NFL combine last week, running the 40-yard dash in a record-setting 4.21 seconds.

“Worthy will be a really interesting test case, because the speed is special and it shows up on tape,” Brugler said. “But he was 165 pounds at the combine — and that number will scare off some teams. However, if he lasts all the way to pick No. 32, Red Raiders (like Mahomes) and Longhorns will learn to get along in Kansas City.”

Mahomes showed his enthusiasm for Worthy’s speed by praising the prospect on X, formerly Twitter.

Ahead of the combine, Brugler ranked Worthy as the 46th-best prospect in this year’s draft class, listing him at 6-foot-1 and 172 pounds. But Worthy’s breakaway speed and impressive route running could elevate him over other prospects for the Chiefs, who sought to learn as much as possible about the second tier of receiver prospects at the combine.

Reid and Veach know that this year’s deep class of receivers should allow the team to have an opportunity to acquire another one for Mahomes. At the combine, the Chiefs interviewed several receivers, the most notable being Worthy, Brian Thomas Jr. (LSU), Troy Franklin (Oregon) and Adonai Mitchell (Texas).

“I think it’s a good receiver class and good O-line class,” Veach said last week. “From the standpoint of picking so late in the draft, those pockets, like late one to early two and late two to early three, the numbers have been better than they have been in the past for D-line, O-line and receiver.”

Worthy would be a logical replacement for six-year veteran Marquez Valdes-Scantling, whom the team released last week, a move that created $12 million in cap space with just $2 million in dead money, according to Over the Cap. One reason for the switch is that Worthy is younger and will have several years to build chemistry with Mahomes.

The ideal situation this offseason is for the Chiefs to revamp their receiving depth chart by adding a talented rookie, such as Worthy, and another veteran through free agency. Some veterans for the Chiefs to consider later this month are Calvin Ridley, Darnell Mooney, Gabe Davis, Curtis Samuel and K.J. Osborn.

The defense was the Chiefs’ strength in 2023. Improving the offense, especially with Mahomes in his prime, needs to be the priority this offseason. A receiver like Worthy would help.
