Liam Neeson feels the Force is weakening in Star Wars.
Neeson’s epic performance as Qui-Gon Jinn in Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace (1999) can still captivate fans. He has also voiced the character in various animated series and made a guest appearance in Obi-Wan Kenobi.
In a recent episode of the Conan O’Brien Needs A Friend podcast, when asked if fans approach Neeson for autographs, the actor responded:
“Not all the time. I mean it is a cult. There’s so many movies and spin-offs among other things. You’re diluting the whole thing, I think. That’s my personal thing.”after a Star Wars autograph and I don’t want to give autographs. We’re at an airport. Oh look, it’s not the kid. It’s the grandfather. There he is. Or the dad. Horn-rimmed glasses and a beard. And they become 11 year-olds.”
Neeson candidly discussed the sprawling state of the Star Wars franchise and criticized its overextension. Although he did not delve too deeply into his grievances, it was evident that he believes the strength of Star Wars lies in its selectivity of projects.
The Star Wars universe was much smaller when Liam Neeson first embodied Qui-Gon Jinn, featuring only three main films, a holiday special, and two temporarily aired animated series. Now, the franchise has grown exponentially, comprising 11 live-action films, several animated series, and a rising number of live-action series available on Disney+. Moreover, Disney has disclosed that they are developing several new films and shows.
A Galaxy Overcrowded: Neeson Questions Star Wars’ Continuous Growth
Neeson’s argument raises a pertinent question: has the continuous outpouring of new content diminished the specialness of a new Star Wars release? Previously, each new addition to the franchise was a highly anticipated event. Yet, with the development of Disney Plus and the ongoing flow of new content, the enthusiasm surrounding each release has lessened, as they have become relatively common occurrences.
The quality of individual pieces of content, such as the highly acclaimed The Mandalorian and the eagerly anticipated Andor, undeniably contribute to the overall vitality of the franchise.
Conversely, other projects like The Book of Boba Fett have been met with skepticism, deemed by some as non-essential additions. The mass of new Star Wars content has undeniably lessened the uniqueness of each release, regardless of its individual quality. This trend is expected to continue due to the extensive list of movies and TV shows awaiting release.
Liam Neeson’s criticism of the Star Wars expansion highlights a broader debate surrounding the franchise’s future. While some suggest that the continuous stream of new content strengthens the Star Wars universe, others, including Neeson, believe it undermines the overall impact.
Ultimately, the verdict lies in the quality of individual projects and their collective contribution to the larger narrative.
