Monkey D. Luffy, the protagonist of One Piece, is on his way to becoming the King of the Pirates. Every arc of the series takes Luffy one step closer to his dream and as the series has entered the final saga, he is not far away from his goal. However, it has not been an easy ride, and looking at the current events it is only going to get more and more difficult. There was only one character who was able to achieve the feat and his name of Gol D. Roger.

Roger is the only one who earned the title of the King of the Pirates and was able to discover the One Piece treasure. But there is a theory surfacing on the internet that states that Luffy is in fact Gol D. Roger and he traveled in time and there are some evidences that support this bizarre theory.

One Piece Theory States Luffy is Gol D. Roger

According to a theory posted by u/MaesterAz1 on Reddit, Gol D. Roger is Luffy who time-traveled. The theory states that both Roger and Luffy have similar appearances, as well as similar personalities which has been quoted many times in the series. It also states that Law will sacrifice himself to give Luffy immortality which will remove his scar.

After that Luffy will travel back in time to become JoyBoy and live for almost 900 years until his execution in Loguetown. The Straw Hat that both characters share is another piece of evidence for the theory. Also, Roger knowing about the strength of his crewmate Rayleigh even before he knew him supports the theory as well. When Crocus mentioned that Luffy might be the one Roger was waiting for, it can be stated that he was waiting for his younger self.

The final element that supports the theory is that both Luffy and Roger share the same dream which was revealed when Ace told Luffy’s dream to Yamato and she read the same thing in Oden’s book. However, it has not been disclosed in the series yet. Therefore, while Roger was being executed, he announced the Great Pirate Era to inspire his younger self to become the King of the Pirates and find the One Piece.

Similarities Between Roger and Luffy

Although the theory seems bizarre, there are a lot of uncanny similarities between Roger and Luffy in One Piece. Gol D. Roger was born in Loguetown, in the East Blue, the same place where he was put to death. Although Luffy’s birthplace is unknown, it was most likely in East Blue. They also have the same middle initial, “D.” and the recognizable Straw Hat in common.

Both of them share the same dream and like thrill and adventure that has been seen in the series multiple times. Along with all of this, both of them also possessed the Voice of All Things and shared the same kind of Haki types as seen during their fights.

Although it can be said their similarity is just a way of Eiichiro Oda hinting that Luffy will become the King of the Pirates, the sheer amount of similarities makes fans question the characters. The theory also seems bizarre but many other time-traveling theories have also been developed in the past and just like them this one also doesn’t seem far-fetched.
