SUMMARY

Monkey D. Luffy is one of the very few protagonists who does not kill his enemies unlike modern day anime like Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw Man.

In One Piece Volume 4 SBS, Eiichiro Oda said that Monkey D. Luffy does not physically kill his enemies, instead he crushes their dreams.
Monkey D. Luffy crushing his enemies dreams is a much worse fate than killing them since the characters in One Piece are ready to do anything to fulfil their dreams.

Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece has inspired a generation of anime. For almost 25 years, it has always been one of the best anime. Considered to be one of the Big Three of anime, One Piece has set several records that are hard to break. Even during the Crunchyroll Anime Awards, it won two awards, including the Best Protagonist Award.

Monkey D. Luffy’s fans are spread throughout the world. The Wano arc saw him finally transforming into Gear 5, for which the fans have been waiting for so long. But even in his most potent form, Luffy has killed his enemies. While fans found it peculiar when compared to modern anime, there is a particular reason why the Future Pirate King refrains from killing his enemies.

Monkey D. Luffy Is A Dream Killer

One Piece has gone through several phases of the anime world. When the anime began, the Shonen protagonists refrained themselves from killing their enemies.

Naruto and Bleach were prime examples. But as anime became more mainstream, it evolved and uplifted that restriction.

Modern Shonen anime like Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw Man saw the protagonists killing their enemies in a bloodbath.

Often, several mangaka answer fan questions. These question-and-answer sections are featured in different volumes of their manga. This section is called SBS, or “Shitsumon o Boshū Suru,” which means “I’m Taking Questions?” In One Piece Volume 4’s SBS, Eiichiro Oda was asked why Monkey D. Luffy does not kill his enemies, to which he said that Luffy is a dream killer. Instead of killing his enemies physically, he mentally kills them.

By crushing his enemies in battles, he destroys their dreams. The One Piece fanbase is aware the characters can put their lives on the line to achieve their dreams. Roronoa Zoro was ready to lose his left hand for Sandai Kitetsu, just to fulfill his dream of becoming the strongest swordsman in the world. So, Luffy crushing their dreams is a fate much worse than killing his enemies.

One Piece Might Soon Adapt The Modern Ways

The reason behind Luffy not killing his enemies was answered by Eiichiro Oda in Volume 4’s SBS. But it has been a couple of decades since Volume 4 was released. The anime world has changed a lot since then. With the modern approach, the Straw Hat captain might have to change his ideal soon. It is still not clear whether Kaido is alive or was killed by falling into the lava after fighting Luffy.

It might be a foreshadowing of Monkey D. Luffy’s killing days. The Final Saga of One Piece has begun, and as far as fans can think, Blackbeard will be his final enemy before getting his hand on the ultimate treasure. During that fight, he might need to kill the man responsible for his brother’s death. But it is still a belief until Eiichiro Oda confirms it.

Monkey D. Luffy has always been a killer. Getting their dreams destroyed is the worst kind of punishment that one can receive. Physical injuries can heal over time, but mental injuries keep on eating a person from the inside. Luffy ensures that he mentally damages them so that their lives have no meaning further on.
