NBA legend Dwyane Wade was nominated in the Best Documentary Short category at Sunday night’s 2024 Academy Awards for his work as an executive producer on “The Barber of Little Rock,” but lost to “The Last Repair Shop,” leaving him off the exclusive list of basketball players to win an Oscar.

Kobe Bryant is perhaps the most popular NBA player of the three who have won the statue because his short animated film titled “Dear Basketball” was written and narrated by him.

The other two NBA players to win an Oscar are Shaquille O’Neal and Stephen Curry, who did so as executive producers of the documentary short “The Queen of Basketball.”

Even though Wade’s production company didn’t win the award, the fact it was nominated is already a huge deal for him and those NBA players he is inspiring to do the same when they retire.

“And I shared with her that it was Barber of Little Rock, and she said, ‘Wait a minute. My friends have been talking about it. They’ve watched it, they’ve seen it.’

“So that was a cool moment to be able to let my daughter know that I’m on that side of the world, and we’re telling some, and highlighting some really cool stories that are meaningful and impactful.”
