Patrick Mahomes’ new contract makes Chiefs quarterback one of the most underpaid players in the NFL
Patrick Mahomes is wildly underpaid.
While the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback received a record-setting $450 million contract in 2020, the average annual value (AAV) of Mahomes’ deal places him behind multiple NFL QBs.

Several of the QBs paid more than Mahomes haven’t even reached the Super Bowl.
Mahomes is 3-1 in the big game while becoming the NFL’s heir to Tom Brady.
Joe Burrow topped the NFL in AAV during the 2023 season, making a whopping $55 million.
Burrow dealt with injury issues and Cincinnati finished with a 9-8 record that kept the Bengals out of the playoffs.
But Cincy reached the Super Bowl in 2021 and is just a year removed from the AFC Championship.
Next up on the AAV list is Justin Herbert, and that’s where Mahomes becomes seriously underpaid.

Herbert made $52.5 million this season, which is $7.5 million more than Mahomes.
The Los Angeles Chargers went 5-12 and recently hired Jim Harbaugh away from Michigan to try and get more out of Herbert, who’s put up big numbers but not come close to reaching the Super Bowl.
Lamar Jackson is third on the AAV list with $52 million.
Mahomes and the Chiefs recently knocked Baltimore out of the AFC Championship game, while Jackson disappointed with a Super Bowl spot on the line.
He still hasn’t reached the big game, even though he won NFL MVP again in 2023.
The next two QBs who top Mahomes should result in another offseason contract renegotiation for the best QB in the NFL.

Murray missed the initial part of the year, then led a 4-13 Arizona team.
Somehow, Deshaun Watson also made more than Mahomes this year.
Watson earned $46 million in 2023, which is $1 million more than the QB who’s in the Super Bowl for the fourth time in his career.
Watson also hasn’t come close to the Super Bowl and the Cleveland Browns QB currently stands as one of the worst trades in NFL history.
While Mahomes is set to make almost half a billion dollars in his current deal, the Chiefs are clearly receiving a financial advantage from stretching out Mahomes’ contract and only paying him $45 million a year to keep leading them to the Super Bowl.
